** Clearing Skies Above Doral
Doral Financial (NYSE: DRL) issued a bunch of important press releases this week.
First they announced a management shake-up, hardly unexpected, by installing John Ward, the former head of American Express Bank as their interim CEO.
Today, they formally announced that Antonio Faria was appointed the head of Doral Bank.
Prior to joining Doral, Mr. Faria served as the financial point man of the Puerto Rico government, being the first to occupy the state’s three principal financial positions in a four-year term: President of the Government Development Bank, President of the Economic Development Bank, and Commissioner of Financial Institutions.
They are cleaning house before the restatement, which should occur before the end of October. Fitch, the rating agency, reported that they are in contact with the bank and are satisfied that the restatement is on track without further surprises, and that they are comfortable with the new developments in the upper management suite.
Morningstar stood by their position on the stock – that it is undervalued.
I still believe the shares and the options are cheap. But, because this is a restatement situation, there is risk involved. The options we chose to buy for this play, the January 2007 $20 call (OVL AD) remain attractive at current levels.
Expect Doral to exhibit ongoing volatility until the end of the year – I will be following the situation closely.
Regards,
Karim Rahemtulla
